Former Liberty County stars make headlines

• Former Lady Panther Miata Askew scored 10 points in the Young Harris Lady Mountain Lions’ 64-39 loss to North Georgia College and State University on Monday.

• Former Liberty County High School basketball player Lamar Richardson continues to lead the East Georgia College Bobcats in scoring. Richardson scored 21 points in the Bobcats’ 85-84 win over USC-Salkahatchie on Nov. 10 and 34 points in the Bobcats’ 88-65 win against Chattahoochee Valley on Nov. 4.

Richardson scored in double digits in East Georgia’s 78-75 win over West Georgia Tech on Nov. 1, and scored 27 points in the Bobcats’ season opening win against East Point Jagz, a semi-professional team, on Oct. 17.

• Former Bradwell Institute running back Sheldon Barnes ran for a career high 120 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries Saturday to help the Savannah State University Tigers earn their first victory of the season against visiting to North Carolina-Central at Memorial Stadium.

The Tigers won 28-21, according to a report posted on SSU’s athletic website.

According to the latest stats posted online Barnes has rushed for 560 yards on 117 carries since he started filling in for injured running back Justin Babb. Babb has not played since Sept. 18, when he hurt his leg in a game against Bethune-Cookman.

Barnes has scored 4 touchdowns for SSU this season. The victory at home Saturday ended the Tigers’ (1-9) 11 game losing streak.

• Former Lady Panther softball player Stephanie Cedola is playing outfield on the East Georgia College Bobcats’ inaugural softball team this season.
