The annual memorial golf tournament in memory of the late Henry “Hank” White was held at Cherokee Rose Country Club Aug. 4.  The tournament raises funds for college scholarships.

The day of the tournament was warm and sunny for golfers, yet time was taken to recognize the seven recipients of the 2018 scholarship awards. Students from Bradwell Institute, Liberty County High School, First Calvary Missionary Baptist Church and the community were lauded for their achievements.  Recipients submitted essays and letters of recommendation which were judged by a committee to determine the winners.  Winners received $1,000.00 each.

Scholarship recipients included Keyana Boone who attends Mercer University, Tymya Bullard who will attend Fort Valley State University, Sequoia Eldridge who will attend Clayton State University, Mya Gilliard who will attend Clark Atlanta University, Destiny LeCounte who will attend East Georgia State College, Cecilia Taylor who will attend Georgia State University and Tamaya Varnedoe who will attend Georgia Southern University.

Golfers and scholarship winners were welcomed by Henry White, Jr., son of the late Henry “Hank” White and Derrick Taylor, tournament chairperson. They sadly acknowledged the recent passing of Irene Julia White, daughter of the late Henry “Hank” White, and a committee member for the golf tournament.  White, Jr. and Taylor thanked participants for their continued support of the tournament.

Winning scholars then introduced themselves and named the schools they would be attending.  Scholarship recipients thanked golfers for their support and encouraged them to enjoy the tournament.

Following the tournament, a delicious meal prepared by First Calvary Missionary Baptist Church was served as tournament winners were announced and door prizes were awarded.

First place team members were Larry Armstrong, Felton Dickens, Wendell Mallard and Charles Sapp. Second place team members were Andrew Allen, Randy Fields, Jake Knight and Kyle Sherfesee.

Third place team members were Allen English, Brian McCarter, Joe Richards and Mike Tussey.

Prizes were also awarded to Dustin McCain for the longest drive on hole 14, straightest drive to Brian McCarter on hole 16, longest putt to Charles Sapp on hole 18, closest-to-pin to Ricky Kennedy on hole 7, closest-to-pin to Beau Singleton on hole 13, and closest-to-pin to Felton Dickens on hole 17.

The scholarship committee thanks the community, sponsors and participants, for their support through the years: Cherokee Rose Country Club, major sponsors, hole sponsors, contributors of prizes and monetary donations and golfers.
