As the injuries continue, so do the losses for the Long County Baseball team. The team lost their ninth game in a row this past Friday, losing 8-1 to Brantley County in Nahunta.
But in the loss, the injury bug continued to stay with the Blue Tide as they lost their third pitcher of the season, Brandon Simmons.
Simmons started the game and pitched four innings, but he came out in the fifth because of right arm pain.
The Tide managed to keep the game close through the top of the sixth, only trailing 3-1. But in the sixth, the Herons scored five runs.
In the game, Stetson Strickland led Long County at the plate, going 1-for-3 with a run scored. Simmons took the loss for the Blue Tide and Brantley County’s Louis Bailey earned the win.
“In 40 years of coaching, I have never had this many key injuries on a team” Long County coach Wayne Sasser said. “I’m still proud of the team’s effort. They haven’t given me one discipline problem and they are giving everything they have.”
Simmons is the third pitcher to go down this season for Long County, and he was the last of the three anticipated starters from the beginning of the year, following Stetson Strickland (elbow injury) and Blake Strickland (broken foot).
Simmons’ injury is to his right bicep where it attaches to the bone, according to Sasser.
He was scheduled to be seen at the Georgia Center for Sports Medicine on Tuesday, to determine the extent of the injury.
Right now, the starting pitchers for Long County were expected to be the bullpen for the team, earlier in the season. According to Sasser, the three starters are Paul Lewandowski, Britt Horne and Ryan Simmons.
“I know it may not seem like it, but every day we are making progress and the kids haven’t quit at all,” pitching coach Brian Thomas said.
The Blue Tide played the Jeff Davis Yellow Jackets on Tuesday, but the score wasn’t available in time for press. The Tide travels tonight to take on the Ware County Gators (7-3) at 5:30 p.m.
