Beating her opponent by a whopping 8.2 inches, Lady Panther discus thrower Jana Jones earned the state crown at the girls state track meet last weekend in Albany.

It’s only her second year tossing the discus, and last year she placed sixth at the state meet.

"I didn’t think I was going to win state in my second year," Jones said. "The first time I ever picked up or touched the discus was last year. I didn’t even know what it was."

She said her older brother Donte Jones, a former Panther football player, convinced her to pick up the sport last season. She said Panther football player and track athlete AJ Bennett also encouraged her to give it a try.
