The Liberty County Lady Panthers hit the road to start their softball season this afternoon at the Tattnall County Tournament starting at 4 p.m. at the Glennville Recreation Center. Their first game is against Toombs and their second game at 6 p.m. pits the Lady Panthers against the Lady Warriors of Tattnall County High School.
The tournament continues Saturday morning when the Lady Panther take on Claxton High at 9 a.m. Depending on the outcome of the games bracket, play will start in the single elimination tournament.
Coach Jerome Standard, assistant coach Adrian Chapple and the Lady Panther squad, host the Wayne County Yellow Jackets at 4:30 p.m. Aug. 19 as their home opener.
Just like the football team the region re-alignment means the Lady Panthers will face four unknown teams this season as Washington County, Thomson, West Laurens and Baldwin are added to the Lady Panthers schedule for 3-AAA. Rival Richmond Hill and Burke County stayed with the Panthers in the region games.
The Lady Panthers went 13-8 overall and 7-6 last season while in the sub-region 3S-AAA. The winning season placed the Lady Panthers in a playoff spot before being eliminated. Richmond Hill, also in 3S-AAA last season went 14-7 overall and 8-2. Burke (3S-AAA last season) had a disappointing season at 0-9 and 0-6 respectively.
Washington County moves from 3N-AAA in to 3-AAA. They were 3-15 over and 3-6 last year. Former 3N-AAA, Thomson, is coming off a winning season with 19-12 over all and 9-1 in the region.
West Laurens moves from 4-AAA to the Lady Panthers' region. They were 15-6 over all and 10-3 last year. Baldwin comes in with a record of 8-12 overall and 2-9 while in region 4-AAAA.
