Lady Panthers win region opener

The Liberty County girls’ soccer team put on an offensive showcase Saturday, winning at Thomson 9-1 in its first Region 3-AAAA action of the season.

Lady Panther soccer coach Jarvis McArthur said he was proud of the powerful performance his soccer team displayed Saturday. He said Sidney Wilkinson led the way with four goals, Cortney Welch had three goals, and Jennifer Garcia and senior Myesha Robinson also scored.

“I always stress how important it is to get that first goal and not letting up afterwards,” McArthur said. “I was very pleased with the level of intensity at which the girls played early on, giving us a 6-0 lead at halftime.”

Rebecca Nelson and Tatiana White kept the defensive pressure on the Bulldogs, McArthur said.

The Lady Panthers are 1-2 overall.

Also Saturday, the Liberty boys’ team fell 3-0 in its the region opener 3-0 to fall to 0-3 overall.

The Liberty teams host Windsor Forest on Friday, with the boys playing first at 5 p.m., and the girls’ game follows.

In other soccer news, the Bradwell teams were swept Friday in South Effingham in their first Region 3-AAAAA games. The Lady Tigers fell 5-0, while the Tigers dropped a 3-1 decision.

The Bradwell girls are 3-2 overall and 0-1 for the region. The boys are 2-1-2 overall and 0-1 in region play.

The Bradwell teams were scheduled to host Statesboro on Tuesday.
The Tigers and Lady Tigers next play in Richmond Hill on Friday beginning at 5 p.m.
