Lady Tide Softball Team Shows Well on All-Region Team Mike Riddle 11/12/10 The 2010 2-AA All-Region softball team was announced recently and the Long County High School team had six players recognized for their performances on the diamond.
Kayla Mills, who recently verbally committed to play for Middle Georgia College, was selected first-team All Region, while fellow seniors Kelby Manning and Kimber Sapp were named to the second team. Gaining Honorable Mention honors were Ashley Murphy, Audrey Hulvey and Shelby Mock.
Lady Blue Tide coach Jenny Alfirov said she was a little disappointed in her squad’s 8-13 record, but added the team had plenty to be proud of and accomplished a lot of firsts this season.
"The two wins over Wayne County were huge for us," Alfirov said. "Beating Pierce and Brantley both in one season stands out as well. It is the first time in my coaching career at Long County that we have beaten Pierce, Brantley, or Wayne. Those are three very respected programs, and I am very proud of my girls for pulling out wins against those teams."
Alfirov credited her seniors with much of the team’s success this fall.
"Replacing them will not be an easy task," she said. "It had been a pleasure to watch them develop since their freshman year. As the group that I have been with for four years, they hold a special place in my heart."
