JEFFERSON - The Long County Blue Tide wrestling teams competed against some of the best teams in the state this past weekend as they took part in the GWCA Invitational at Jefferson High School.
The Lady Tide came away with second place out of 17 teams and 10 girls finished in the top six while the boys team finished 14th with two finishers on the winner’s stand.
Three wrestlers for the Lady Tide finished in the winner’s bracket with Aliana Morales, Shelby Hoard and Tymiah Powell all advancing to the finals.
Morales, wrestling in the 130-pound weight class, won her weight class while Hoard at 145 and Powell at 235 both finished second.
Also finishing in the top six were Aleena Clark, Hayley Jones, Bella Gardner, Daisy Ortiz, Janiya Williams, Evelyn Walters, and Alisson Otero.
Overall, the girls finished second with 196 points, behind Harris County. They came out on top over some top teams, including Gainesville, Jefferson and North Oconee.
The boys had two finishers on the winner’s stand with Roman Stewart-Evans taking third place in the 113-pound weight class and Casey Dean taking fourth in the 138-pound class.
Both teams will be back on the mat on Wednesday, December 17 in a quad match against Statesboro, Burke County and Hephzibah in Statesboro.
