The Long County Blue Tide softball team lost a tough 2-1 game to the Jeff Davis Yellow Jackets this past Thursday.
Having to travel to Hazelhurst, Coach Cindy Mills knew the game against the Yellow Jackets would be one of the tougher games on the Blue tide schedule.
Jeff Davis came into the game 3-1, having lost only to undefeated Appling County, by a score of 7-8 over ten innings.
In Thursday’s game, the Yellow Jackets scored early with one run in the bottom of the first inning. But with solid pitching from freshman Kayla Mills, and good field from the rest of the Blue Tide team, they were able to keep Jeff Davis scoreless from the second inning right into the eighth.
The Blue Tide tied the game up in the top of the fourth, but couldn’t round the bases, so the score was 1-1, until the Jackets scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth, making the final score 2-1.
Mills said, “Jeff Davis has a very solid program, they made the elite eight last year, and made the playoffs the last five years.”
According the Mills, “Our girls did a lot of things right and we can definitely see improvement; we’re very proud of them.”
Kayla Mills pitched the entire game, striking out four. She also led the team in hitting, going 2 for 4.
Shelby Mock went 1 for 3, and Brittany Chapman went 1for 4, and had the lone RBI for the team.
Bri Page managed to get on base three times, all by walks.
The Blue Tide girls now have a record of 1-4 in the Region 2-AA Standings, and have an overall record of 3-7. They will be home this Tuesday, when they take on the Charlton County Indians. The Charlton team is also 3-7, and they have a 1-5 record in the region. Gametime is 5:30.
