The Long County Lady Blue Tide softball team finally got the chance to play a full home game when they welcomed in the Brunswick Pirates on Wednesday, August 12. It was a pitcher’s duel that ended with a 1-0 Blue Tide victory.
Brunswick got back-to-back hits with one out in the top of the first inning but sophomore pitcher Sophia Brewster’s strikeout ended the threat.
Brewster fanned two more in the second, and the Tide put runners on Mackenzie Crews’ single and Alyssa Skipper’s bunt that went for a double. The threat, though, did not lead to any runs.
Skipper took over in the circle for Brewster and the Tide defense continued to play well with Skipper striking out her first batter since her sophomore season.
The Tide’s string of good luck-bad luck at the plate continued as they once again got two runners on, but could not score. That happened one more time in the fifth, but not before Skipper recorded two more strikeouts in the top of that inning.
Junior Lana Lewis had her chance to shine in the bottom of the sixth. Lewis saw her “favorite” pitch and sent the ball over the left field wall.
“I was just looking for my pitch,” Lewis said. “I hadn’t really swung at a good pitch all day, so I was really trying to be selective. I decided ‘why not swing at it?’ It was a boring game, so I was glad to get the energy up.”
The Tide kept the Pirates off the board in the top of the seventh to hold on for the 1-0 win.
The Tide are now 4-0 on the year and have still only allowed one run all season.
