Liberty County baseball and softball All-Star teams competed in Georgia Recreation and Parks Association District 2 tournaments last month.
The Flea Boys #1, Mite Girls, and Junior Girls all qualified for State tournaments on July 13-15 by finishing second in the District tournament.
The Flea (8 and under) Boys State tournament was held in Savannah where Liberty County faced Vidalia in the opening game and lost 13-3. The Liberty squad got on track Thursday, winning three games in a row, defeating the Savannah Lightning 13-1, Richmond Hill 8-7 and Dalton 11-3.
This set up a rematch with Vidalia. The lead changed hands several times but ultimately Vidalia came away with a 7-5 win and went on to win the championship. Liberty County tied for 5th place in the 15 team tournament.
The Mite (10 and under) Girls tournament was in Tifton and Liberty faced Tift County in the opening game. Liberty lost the close game 14-12 and fell into the losers bracket. Liberty waseliminated the next day with a 17-5 loss to Vidalia.
The Junior (14 and under) Girls traveled to Augusta where they faced Vidalia and lost 19-7. The Liberty girls were eliminated by Haralson County, 20-5, the next day.
As one of only two teams from District 2, the Liberty County Senior (17 and under) Girls advanced straight to the State Tournament in Cook County on June 14-16. Liberty was defeated by Cook County in the first game, 10-1.
They bounced back the next day with a 12-4 win over Bainbridge, but were eliminated by Grady County, 13-0 in their third game.
Other teams that were eliminated at District tournaments included Flea Girls, Flea Boys #2, Mite Boys #1, Mite Boys #2, Midget (12 & under) Girls, Midget Boys, and Junior Boys.
