The Liberty County Lady Panthers overcome a cold shooting start to upend Long County in the Region 3-AAA semifinals.

The Liberty County girls overcome a cold shooting start Friday in the Region 3-AAA semifinals. They couldn’t repeat the feat Saturday afternoon.

The Jenkins Lady Warriors won the region title Saturday at Long County High School, downing the Lady Panthers 44-30. The loss also ended the Lady Panthers’ nine-game winning streak.

Jenkins, 23-4, held the Lady Panthers to seven points in the first half and just two field goals in opening a commanding 21-7 lead at halftime.

The Lady Warriors led by as much as 20, 28-8, in the third quarter. Neveah Saddler led the Lady Panthers with 13 points.

The Lady Panthers will get the No. 2 seed from the region in the upcoming Class AAA state tournament.

The Lady Panthers did not make a shot from the floor for the first 12 minutes of their semifinal game against Long County, but rallied to claim a 48-44 win to earn a spot in the region championship.

Liberty County trailed 17-7 in the second quarter before Layla Santiago got their first bucket with 3:47 to go before halftime. A Maritza Troche basket and Saddler’s 3-pointer cut the lead to 17-14.

Saddler’s two free throws tied the game at 17-17 and Jada Morant’s basket with 7 seconds to go forged another tie at 19-19.

The Liberty County Panthers built a comfortable early lead and coasted past Beach 52-39 in the Region 3-AAA consolation game Saturday at Long County High School.

With the win, the Panthers are 15-8 for the season and await the release of the state’s Class AAA power rankings and state tournament bracket.

Calvary Day rallied in the second half to upend Liberty 45-38 in the region semifinals Friday evening. Liberty built an early 18-13 lead on Keanu Maynard’s pull-up jumper but the Cavs’ Chiel Singleton’s baskets tied the game at 19-19.

Liberty led 33-29 on a court-length pass for a layup to end the third quarter, but Calvary outscored the Panthers 16-5 from there to close out the win.
