In their final AAU tournament of the season the Coastal Crew 15U Rebels placed 11th overall, battling against older teams in Orlando the final weekend of July.
The squad, coached by Ernie Walthour and David Linderman, went 2-1 in their pool bracket, losing to the Connecticut Mavericks 80-59, but beating Indy EBC 55-45 and Kansas City Magic 50-33. They finished second in the pool, advancing them to the championship brack.
In round one the boys beat the New York Gauchos 54-52. In round two the Rebels lost to the Warriors of Ohio 64-57. That placed the boys in the consolation bracket, where they played the other Rebels team coached by Reginalde Castille.
The 15U Rebels edged out a 49-45 win. The boys went on to beat the Florida Xtreme 70-64 before losing to Team Elite South 61-56.
“We would have finished tenth had we won that game,” Walthour said. “It was a great team effort. Jamorris Hill played very well. Herbert Roberts played tremendous. Dominique Kirkley had some good series. And Trevon Scott played good. And I was real pleased with the minutes we got from Miguel Pineda.”
Overall, Walthour said, he was impressed on how his 15U squad fared against older teams.
Walthour added that the success of previous Rebel teams at nationals drew attention.
“So many Division I coaches came to watch us play,” he said. “We had Florida State watch us, BCU, Ole Miss and quite a few Division I coaches.”
