Area swimmers shine at Winter Classic meet

Four members of the Liberty YMCA Heat swim team qualified for state or sectional events at the Winter Classic held Jan. 14-16 in Savannah.

Sandra Scott qualified in 15 events for the state meet and nine events for the sectional meet, which will be held in March in Nashville, Tenn.

She posted a time of 5 minutes, 3.86 seconds in the 400-meter individual medley and a time of 1:05.86 in the 100-meter butterfly. Scott finished the 50-meter butterfly in 29.11 seconds. She finished the 100-meter individual medley in 1:07.21.

 

Jorge Melendez qualified for the

Georgia 14U state championship in February by finishing the 100-meter freestyle in 1:15.01.

Lexie Huffman, Viviana Melendez, Madison James and Scott will be competing at state in the 200-meter medley relay and the 200-meter freestyle relay.

Brayden Huffman placed third in the 200-meter freestyle and eighth in the 50-meter freestyle. Trent Huffman placed fifth in the 100-meter backstroke.

Juan Vendrel and Jacob Lee both had some fast swims, with Vendrel breaking the 25-second barrier in the 50-meter freestyle at 24.47, the 55 second barrier in the 100-meter freestyle at 54.13 and the 6-minute mark in the 500-meter freestyle with a time of 5:54.37. Lee dropped 26 seconds off his time in the 500-meter free style and seven seconds from his 200-meter freestyle time.

Swimmers from North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida and Georgia were represented.
