Former Long County High School basketball and football player Ricardo Rivera is playing basketball at Voorhees College, where the men’s team just won the 2012-13 Association of Independent Institutions Division I college basketball title.
Voorhees won the state title by beating West Virginia Tech, 65-64, last Sunday.
The Voorhees squad overcame a 30-26 half-time deficit, according to their athletic website, to slip past second-seeded West Virginia University Institute of Technology and capture the title.
They finished 21-11 and advance to the NAIA Men’s Division I Basketball Championships set for March 13-19 in Kansas City, Mo.
Rivera, a junior guard on the team, played in 33 games with five starts. He had 55 total rebounds, 55 assists, 40 steals and scored 125 total points this season.
