First Presbyterian Christian Academy goes on one last road trip tonight as it heads to Shellman to play Randolph Southern.
The Patriots are 4-4 overall and 1-2 in Region 2-A of the Georgia Independent School Association classifications. The Highlanders, still searching for their first win of their inaugural football season, are coming off a rough road game against Crisp Academy last week when they lost, 50-14.
“I don’t know if we underestimated them or we felt like we could handle them …
but obviously, they took it to us,” Highlander football coach Andy Yanzetich said about last week’s loss. “I think mentally we weren’t prepared going in to it, and then physically we didn’t give it our all, not like we did in the game before.”
Yanzetich was referring to the Highlanders’ near-comeback Oct. 19 at home against Robert Toombs Christian Academy. FPCA battled back from a 36-14 deficit by scoring 32 points in the second half. Toombs held on to win 48-46. Yanzetich said his team the boys couldn’t muster up the same ambition last week at Crisp.
“But we will fix it this week though,” he said.
Yanzetich said the Patriots typically run a triple-option offense out of the pistol.
“So for us, it will be all about gap responsibility,” he said. “If we can stay in our gaps and then shoot the gaps on them, we have a chance.”
He said the Highlanders have plenty of reasons to fight hard in their last two games of the regular season.
“We still have a chance to win the last two games, and if we win these last two games, we could make the playoffs,” he said.
FPCA will host Fullington Nov. 9 at Long Bell Stadium in the regular-season game. Yanzetich said the school is planning to honor the military and wounded warriors that night, as well as welcome many of the school’s middle-school football players and Liberty County Recreation Department players.
“We are going to have a lot going on for the community,” he said. “There will be festivities before and after the game as well as halftime.”
