While prep baseball took the center spotlight for spring sports, another local team had what its coach called the best season yet, making it all the way to the quarterfinals of the state playoffs.
First Presbyterian Christian Academy’s Lady ’Landers soccer team went 13-5 overall this season while playing at its new home field at St. James Park.
Coach Tom Sukaratana took the FPCA girls into the second round of the Class AA finals before being eliminated in overtime by Piedmont Academy on May 12.
Still, the Lady ’Landers hoisted the runner-up trophy after managing five shutout victories this season.
Maggie Dickens, Summer Mehalko, Brooke Standard and Kelsey Higgason were named to the all-region team.
This year, 24 players were chosen for the all-state team. Of those 24, only three were freshmen. Two of those freshmen were FPCA’s Standard and Higgason.
Standard had 21 goals and 25 assists for the season, and Higgason had 34 goals and 15 assists for the season.
