The generosity of church members and the community made the inaugural Waldo Pafford Memorial Scholarship Fund Charity Golf Tournament a success, according to event organizer Clifford Johnson.
“These sponsors donated everything so we didn’t have to cover any expenses,” Johnson said, adding that helped push them just above $8,000 for the tournament held Saturday at Cherokee Rose Country Club.
Pafford was a member of Hinesville First United Methodist Church and an educator for more than 40 years, including a role as the principal of Bradwell Institute and Bradwell Elementary. He died in 1989.
Saturday’s tournament will give eight scholarship recipients $1,000 each for academic needs in college.
The golf tournament was a four-person scramble.
The first-place team was Johnson, Jack Shuman, Paul Rose and Art Gelow. The winning team won a two-night stay at Amelia Island provided by Kenny and Lisa Saitow.
The second-place team of Jordan Roberson, Bo Strickland, Chris Binkley and Ben Floyd won a two-night stay at St. Simons Island from Auto Shine Auto Wash.
Third place went to Joe and Andy Anderson, Travis Mobley and Pat Edwards. They received four rounds of golf at Sapelo Hammock Golf Club and four gift certificates worth $25 each to Capt. Joe’s Seafood.
Cherokee Rose Country Club awarded four rounds of golf and Auto Shine Auto Wash donated four deluxe car washes to the fourth-place team of Jan and Jake Umholtz and Francis and Lamar Smoak.
Sapelo Hammock Golf Club donated four rounds of golf to the fifth-place team of Ed Edwards, Joe Thompson, Bob Leach and Allan Leach.
Hinesville Ford planned to give away a car for a hole-in-one at No. 3 but no one won the car.
Baldinos, Walmart and Auto Shine Auto Wash donated awards for closest to the pin at Nos. 7, 13 and 17.
