Local team fares well

Scott’s All-Stars fifth-grade basketball team placed second in pool play and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the championship bracket at the AAU Nationals, held July 1-4 in Hampton, Va.
The team went 3-2 at the tourney.
“I think coach Khari Collins and the fifth-grade team did a great job in their first year as a fifth-grade team,” All-Stars founder Marcus Scott said. “The current fifth-grade team was composed of fifth-graders that last year had to sit the bench because they were playing on a fifth-grade team with older players.”
Scott said they had enough interest to form a fifth- and sixth-grade team this year.
This year’s fifth-grade squad advanced to the same spot as the last year’s team and finished its season with an 11-11 mark.
“The kids had a great year playing in 22 games, earning 50 hours of community service and they visited seven colleges,” Scott said.
The sixth-grade team will leave Thursday for nationals and will compete in the Division II and Division III tournaments.
The All-Stars’ fifth-grade roster includes:
Ronshen Lawson, Khy Collins, Simon Steele, Isaiah Scott, Deven Merchant, Timothy Powell and Albert Dock.
