Parents, coaches meeting set

A meeting for football coaches and parents of players will be held at 6 p.m. Monday at Smiley Elementary School.
The announcement was made July 23 during the Long County Touchdown Club meeting.
At Monday’s meeting, head coach Ron Flott will provide parents with information on the upcoming season and answer parents’ questions.  
In other developments from the Touchdown Club meeting:
• Long County’s first intersquad scrimmage will be Aug. 9, and the team’s first opposing scrimmage will be against Montgomery County on Aug. 16 in Mount Vernon.  
• The Nov. 8 game against Metter may be rescheduled to Nov. 7.  The scheduling change will take place only if WSAV decides to televise the game.  
• The local-merchant discount cards will be given out to the players during the first two weeks of the school year and will be sold to help support the team.  
• David Holton said that he would discuss with Athletic Director Karen Swindell the possibility of selling reserved parking spaces at Veterans Stadium for the upcoming year.  
After the meeting, Ricky Toledo said that the summer camp for the football team will take place Aug. 1-2 and 5.  
Football, cheerleading coaches needed
Long County Recreation Department Director Michelle Rogers said that there is a need for volunteer football and cheerleading coaches. Those interested in volunteering can contact her at 545-9112.
There is a mandatory meeting for all football coaches at 6 p.m. Aug. 15 at the recreation complex, while the mandatory meeting for cheerleading coaches will be at 6 p.m. Aug 19.  
Rogers said anyone between the ages of 7-12 can play football, and anyone between 5-12 can be a cheerleader.  Applications to participate are at the recreation complex. Cost to play is $25, and the deadline is Aug. 15.
