Although the first high-school football practices are about two weeks off, area fans now can look at their teams’ schedules.
Aug. 1 marks the first official day that football players can practice in full pads and helmets, according to the guidelines posted on the Georgia High School Association’s website, with the first scrimmages set for about two weeks after that.
The upcoming season will mark a new era for Bradwell Institute and first-year head coach Adam Carter and his staff. At First Presbyterian Christian Academy, the Highlanders will play their second season but will be guided by another first-time head coach, Jamie Sharp III. And at Liberty County High School, incoming senior and highly rated recruit Raekwon McMillan will draw in college scouts from across the nation to watch him and other Panthers at Donell Woods Stadium.
Bradwell and Liberty County High School will start their seasons Aug. 16 with scrimmages against Wayne County and Glynn Academy, respectively. The Panthers go to Brunswick to scrimmage the Red Terrors, whom they have yet to beat. Last year was the first time since 2008 the teams did not play each other. Previous games between the squads have been close, with the Red Terrors outscoring the Panthers, 87-71.
The Tigers will host the Yellow Jackets for their scrimmage and hold a 2-0 record against the Jesup team.
But the big draw will take place in the first week of the regular season, when the Tigers head to Donell Woods Stadium to take on the Panthers. Last year, the Panthers beat the Tigers, 13-7, on the night Bradwell unveiled its newly renovated field and fieldhouse.
BI will play in Region 3-AAAAA, Liberty will play in sub-Region 3A-AAAA, and FPCA will play in Region 2-AA of the Georgia Independent School Association.
