The Liberty County Recreation Department had another reason to celebrate this year as the defending state champion senior girls’ All-Star softball team finished as runner-up in this year’s state tournament held June 21-23 in Bainbridge.
The girls beat Cairo, 9-7, and Bowden, 7-6.
The All-Stars were up against Vidalia — the All-Stars’ opponent in last year’s championship game — and lost, 2-0, in game three.
The All-Stars bounced back into the championship bracket to beat Wayne County, 12-1. The girls battled Vidalia again and won, 17-16. A tie record between the teams meant Vidalia and the All-Stars had to play one more game for the state trophy, and Vidalia edged out a 7-3 win.
