The Special Olympics held their opening ceremony April 27 on Fort Stewart starting with their parade of athletes. According to Debbie Tomkiewicz, adaptive physical education teacher and local coordinator of the Liberty County Special Olympics, athletes from Fort Stewart, Liberty and Long County participated in track, wheelchair races and throwing events. “Our event would not have been successful without the help of Mavis Crowell, who works at ACS on Ft. Stewart and Larry Laughlin, who works with their youth sports program,” Tomkiewicz said.
