The Walker Middle School boys’ basketball team claimed the crown at the Southeast Georgia Middle-School Region Tournament on Jan. 19 in Brantley County.
The Wildcats entered the tournament, which was for sixth- and seventh-graders, as the No. 1 seed with a 9-1 record and had a first-round bye to the semifinals.
In the semis, Walker faced the fourth-seeded Ware County Gators. The Wildcats jumped out to a 9-1 lead, but the Gators would fight back as Walker had an 11-9 at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Wildcats ramped up the defense and held the Gators scoreless en route to a 21-9 halftime lead. The second half saw much of the same as the Wildcats cruised to a 45-36 victory.
In the championship game, Walker took on the second-seeded Waycross Bulldogs, who handed the Wildcats their only regular-season loss. This time, however, the Wildcats  blasted the Bulldogs, 50-19, to finish 11-1.
