The Long County Board of Education recently received a plaque from the American Cancer Society, thanking the system for its participation in the 2009 Relay for Life. Relay for Life Regional Cancer Control Director Sharon Proudfoot presented the token of appreciation to the board.
This year, the Long County school system had two schools’ recognized for contributions to the RFL. Long County High School was named an all-star team and Smiley Elementary was recognized as a gold team.
The Smiley team, captained by Melody Lambert, also raised the most money: $3,960.
The relay was on May 1 at Veteran’s Stadium in Ludowici. The theme was “The Silver Screen” and 20 teams took part, raising nearly $35,000.

and board members Dempsey Golden and Linda DeLoach. Also at the ceremony were Brandi Smiley, the 2009 Relay for Life chairwoman, who also will be head
up the county’s event in 2010, and 2010 RFL logistics and luminary event committee member Beverly Johnson.
