The Long County Recreation Department's 7- and 8-year old basketball teams played on Jan. 26, and showed that though the players are small, their hearts were large.
In the first game, the North Carolina Blue took on the Bulldogs, and the Dogs won a competitive, close game, 14-12.
The big shooter in the game was Bulldog, No. 21, Jamel Sloan, who had 10 points. Other hounds who got on the board were No. 32 Erin Ginder and No. 13 Alex Carter who each had 2 points.
The leading scorer for North Carolina was No. 24 Christine Bass, who put up 6 points, while the Blue's No. 23 Deaunte' McDuffie had 4 and No. 45 Holden Riddle wrapped up the scoring with 2 points.
In the second game, the Bulldogs had to stay on the court as they took on the Duke team, and in that game, the Blue beat the Bulldogs 20-8.
This time the Dogs were once again led in scoring by Sloan, with 4, but in this game No. 22 Gary Poppell matched him with 4 points too.
On the Duke team they were led by No. 24 Josh Gordon and No. 23 Matt Strickland, who each put up 10 big points.
In the third game, the Duke team stayed on the court and this time they took on the Yellow Jackets. In a tough game which went back and fourth in momentum, the Duke team won 17 to 11.
Once again the winning team was led in scoring by Strickland and Gordon, who had 11 points and 6 points.
The Yellow Jackets were led in scoring by No. 31 Fallon Bond, who had 8 points, and proved that she could play with any boy on the court, despite her team falling. The Yellow Jacket's No. 15 O'Brien Nobles also had 3 points in the game.
In the final game of the day, the North Carolina Blue was back on the court, and this time they had to take on the tough Yellow Jackets. In a game, which can only be described as, "as physical as it could get" the Jackets won 14-2 over the Blue.
Leading the Yellow Jackets once again was Bond and Nobles, who each had 8 and 6 points, while scoring the lone goal for the North Carolina team was Riddle with 2.
