Long County’s Ahmari Douglas earns statewide honorable mention

Long County junior running back Ahmari Douglas was named to the Georgia High School Football Daily’s Class AAA all-state honorable mention.

Douglas ran for a school record 1,627 yards and 17 touchdowns.

Region foe Calvary Day placed two on the firstteam, offensive lineman Jalin Scott and defensive lineman Terry Simmons. Savannah Christian defensive end Elijah Griffin also earned first-team honors.

Other honorable mentions from the region were Calvary Day tight end Michael Smith, Calvary Day linebacker Troy Ford and Calvary quarterback Jake Merklinger. Sandy Creek’s Gemiere Latimer was named offensive player of the year in Class AAA and Oconee County’s Whit Weeks was named defensive player of the year.

Ware County’s Trey Hargrove was named Class AAAAA state defensive player of the year and Gators coach Jason Strickland was named coach of the year.

Cavs take series opener from Tide

The Long County Blue Tide baseball game into the week knowing they needed to bring their A-game if they were going to beat the Calvary Day Cavaliers. On Tuesday, April 1, they struggled to get much going at the plate as the Cavaliers pulled away late to win the series opener 10-1.
