The Toronto Blue Jays lost to the New York Yankees this Wednesday, and Long County native Dustin McGowan, who picked up the loss, had his first loss game in over a month.
Playing in front of the home fans, both McGowan and the rest of the team knew if they were going to have any shot at the playoffs, they needed a strong performance in their three-game series with the Yankees.
Unfortunately, the team lost the first game on Tuesday 9-2, and then on Wednesday they followed up with another by a score of 4-1.
The Wednesday loss was the fifth in a row by the Blue Jays, and just about ended their chance for the post season tournament.
They did win Thursday night’s game, by a score of 2-1. But even with the win, at 73-73 they are still 10 games behind the Yankees (83-63) in the quest for a wildcard playoff spot.
McGowan, who has been solid during the past month, had a game where he never really could find his rhythm, and from the first inning on, he struggled on the mound.
In the first he had back-to-back two-out walks to Bobby Abreu and Alex Rodriguez, and then he gave up an RBI double. To make matters worse after a wild pitch, Rodriguez then came home. With the Jays unable to score in the first, at the end of one it was New York 2-0.
The Yankees scored two more runs in the fourth inning, and the final score was 4-1.
The Blue Jays had their chance in the game, and even had the bases loaded twice, but the club’s batting woes continued and they could only go one for eight with runners in scoring position.
For the night, McGowan faced 22 batters, walking 3, striking out 6, as he gave up 3 hits. He pitched 5 innings, throwing 99 pitches, with 59 being for strikes. He gave up 4 earned runs in the game, and his ERA for the year is now 4.02, while he has 10 wins and 9 losses.
He is scheduled to be back on the mound Monday as he and the Blue Jays take on the Boston Red Sox at Rogers Centre Stadium in Toronto.
The Sox have been the measure for all other teams this year, and this is still being shown through their 89-58 record, which is the best in the majors.
McGowan has started three games against Boston and has a 1-1 record.
