Thanks to one of its most notable alums, the Liberty County High School football fieldhouse will be home to new weightlifting equipment.
Current NFLer Raekwon McMillan, a Liberty County graduate now with the New England Patriots, is making a $42,000 donation to the school’s football program for the new weights. Along with $30,000 from the education special purpose local option sales tax, the football team will get new weights and a rubberized floor in the fieldhouse.
McMillan was put on injured reserve in May.
Other athletics facilities across the school system are in the midst of upgrades or are have major renovations planned.
Work is underway on replacing the softball field at Bradwell Institute and LCHS’ baseball fields as they convert to a sprint turf. Work has started on replacing the BI softball field surface and it will start in two weeks at LCHS’ baseball field. The total cost is $3.2 million and is being paid for out of ESPLOST proceeds.
Design and survey for a Bradwell softball fieldhouse expansion and a upgrades at Liberty County High’s baseball fieldhouse are underway and are expected to be finished by July 29. New dugouts are part of the work, school system operations director Arnold Jackson said. That project is estimated to cost $900,000.
The existing Bradwell tennis courts are being torn up and will be replaced. New fencing, netting and windscreens also will be installed. Work is expected to start in August, with a price tag of nearly $641,000 from Pope Construction.
The fencing for the Donell Woods Stadium/ Kirk Warner Field improvement project at Liberty County High School hit a snag when it was found to be inside a utility easement.
The fencing on the western side of the project has had to be relocated, and the fencing on the eastern side has had to wait while better dirt was brought in after testing showed soil unsuitable to support the fence. The eastern side is expected to be done in September and the western side will be finished by October.
The overall cost for the improvements at the stadium initially was just under $2 million.
