Baylor captured the NCAA Men’s National Championship Monday night after being led by Liberty County graduate Davion Mitchell to defeat previously unbeaten Gonzaga 86-70. Mitchell has also been named one of the top players in the country.

Last Friday former Liberty County High School basketball player was named Defensive Player of the year by two different groups. First Mitchell was named the Lefty Driesell Defensive Player of the Year. Then he was named the NABC Naismith Defensive Player of the Year.

The 6-foot-2 junior earned the nickname “Off Night,” because the player he guards almost always has an off night.

The native of Hinesville, GA ranked second in the Big 12 in steals with 2.0 per contest. He led the conference in assists (5.4/game) and field goal percentage (.521), ranks second in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.07), seventh in 3-pointers made (2.3/game) and 12th in scoring (32.8).
