Greetings, Bryan County News and Coastal Courier readers!
I am Gerald Thomas, III, the new sports editor for the publication and websites.
Born and raised in Savannah, Georgia, I am the son of Gerald Thomas II and Yolanda Owens and the brother of Charmele and Cameron Thomas.
While in Savannah, I attended Bethesda Academy while competing on the varsity football team before receiving my high school diploma in 2016. Go Blazers!
Once I left Bethesda, I enrolled at Valdosta State University, obtaining my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Mass Media in the Spring 2020 semester. Go Blazers, again!
While in Valdosta, I joined the ‘Oldest and Coldest’ Fraternity of them all; Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and jumpstarted my journalism career.
I began as a staff writer specializing in sports for Valdosta State University’s ‘The Spectator,’ before being promoted to the digital content editor.
Then I would join the staff at WTOC in Savannah as a Summer 2019 news intern.
In the fall of 2019, I became a sports stringer for the Valdosta Daily Times.
Prior to joining the Bryan County News and Coastal Courier, I covered a plethora of teams throughout my sports reporting journey: Nationally ranked Lowndes High School Football, 2019 and 2020 GHSA state football runners-up Brooks County, 2020 and 2021 GHSA basketball state champions Pace Academy Knights, 2018 NCAA Division II National Football Champions Valdosta State Blazers, NCAA Division II nationally ranked Valdosta State Blazers basketball, the Jacksonville Jaguars, and the Tennessee Titans.
Serving the Richmond Hill and Hinesville areas, I plan to bring a breath of fresh air to the paper with my style and sports prowess.
It is my mission to give you the most engaging, entertaining, and informative sports pieces that you have ever experienced.
I look forward to getting started and if you ever see me on your team’s sideline on gameday, do not hesitate to speak.
