The Panthers hit the field Monday afternoon intent on getting in practice time and seeing how their game is developing. Liberty County High School football players are set to scrimmage against Westminster this Saturday and the spots they are still looking to fill include quarterback.
“We will be looking at the quarterback position to see who is ready to go and what we have for back up,” head coach Kirk Warner said.
Currently, the Panthers are looking at Demetrius Stinson and Henry Barrett as quarterback potentials. Stinson is now a junior. Barrett returns as a senior. He left the season early last year with an injury.
The coaches also are looking at a few sophomores who are competing for the spot.
Overall the Panthers will have a relatively young team this year. Most of the returning players are either in the linebacker or lineman position and possibly four returning wide receivers.
Regardless Warner has confidence in the skills and abilities in his players and sets the goal high to make the regional playoffs.
“I think if we stay healthy and can keep some of our key guys on the field I like our chances in making the region playoffs and hopefully make a little noise when we get there,” he said.
In addition to preparing for the game the team welcomed a new wide receiver coach, Greg Martin, who joined the Panther staff after moving here from Oklahoma. He coached for a ninth grade squad in Oklahoma and played during his high school years before injuring his knee in his senior year.
Martin said he has five players who have the potential to be lead wide receivers and will use Saturday’s game to check their skill levels, how they execute routes, how well they catch the ball and how well they hit and block for the option play.
