Pirates blast past Tigers in regular season finale

The Brunswick Pirates scored on each of their first possessions and sailed to a 43-12 win over Bradwell Institute at Olvey Field/Hokey Jackson Stadium on Friday night.

The Pirates, ranked No. 8 in the state, will enter the Class AAAAA state football playoffs as the Region 1 champs. Their win moved their record to 9-1 on the year and 8-0 in the region.

Bradwell ended its season at 2-8 overall and 1-7 in the region.

Carlito Savea’s 2-yard scamper on the final play of the first half accounted for Bradwell’s first score of the game, bringing the Tigers within 29-6.

Tyon Jones’ 23-yard scoring strike with 5:31 to go provided the final touchdown of the game.

The Pirates had three touchdowns called back on penalties, yet they still scored on two of those possessions.

Josiah Gibbons capped Brunswick’s opening drive with a 14-yard run, and Jamarious Towns’ jump pass to massive junior tight end Heze Kent put the Pirates in front 8-0.

Kent, a 6-foot-7, 265-pound top college prospect, powered his way in from 6 yards out on the next possession.

Towns scored from 2 yards out, just after a 45yard gain, with 9:25 left in the first half. He scored on a 13-yard run from the wildcat formation with 5:07 to go before halftime.

The Pirates rushed for 174 yards in the first half and had 229 yards of offense at the half.

Jeremiah Robbins had a 7-yard run on the Pirates’ first drive of the second half, and Grant Moore connected with Josiah Gibbons on a 25-yard scoring pass for Brunswick’s final touchdown of the game.

Jacoby Pasley, who accounted for more than 200 yards of offense against Evans, was held to 8 yards on 12 carries. Of Bradwell’s 33 rushing attempts, 14 went either for no gain or a loss against the Pirates’ defense. Jones was 5-of-7 passing for 57 yards and also had 45 yards receiving. The Tigers’ normally explosive offense was held to two plays over 20 yards. Their longest of the night was Wade Cobb’s 31-yard catch and run.

The Pirates offense rolled up 391 yards, with 250 coming on the ground. William Heck had 92 yards on nine carries, and Moore was 7-of-11 passing for 141 yards.

Brunswick committed 12 penalties and Bradwell was assessed nine accepted penalties.

The Pirates will open the state playoffs at home against Villa Rica. Lakeside- Evans hosts New Manchester, Glynn Academy faces Rome and Effingham plays East Paulding.
