Long County’s Chris Hatfield puts the wraps on Groves running back Makel Brown during the second quarter of the Blue Tide’s Region 3-AAA romp.

SAVANNAH – Shaking off a sluggish start, the Long County Blue Tide, behind Jason Familia’s big night, opened the Region 3-AAA schedule September 5 with a 38-6 romp over Groves at Savannah High.

The Rebels, who had not scored in their previous two games, opened the scoring on Trenton Tukes’ touchdown run midway through the first quarter.

The Blue Tide answered on Jaeason Carryl’s touchdown run early in the second quarter. Familia, who ran seven times for 199 yards, set up the score with a 54-yard ramble.

Jay’quan Johnson’s 2-yard run late in the first half gave the Blue Tide a 14-6 lead.

In the third quarter, Familia burst through the line and shot through the Rebels defense for a 69-yard touchdown gallop, and the resulting two-point conversion staked the Blue Tide to a 22-6 lead.

Cortney Charles added a 17-yard touchdown run to push the advantage to 30-6, and Dylan Tyler’s 66-yard interception return for a score in the fourth quarter sealed the win.

The Blue Tide finished with 301 yards of offense, all on the ground, and overcame three turnovers. Groves posted 257 yards of offense.

The Tide, now 3-0 on the season and 2-0 in the region, will host Liberty County (1-2, 1-1) for homecoming Friday.
