The Bradwell Institute girls’ stingy defense made up for an ice-cold afternoon at the free throw line.
The Tigers held the Liberty County Lady Panthers without a field goal for more than 12 minutes in the second half and cruised to a 62-20 win over their in-county rival Saturday at the LCHS gym.
As the defense stifled the Lady Panthers, the Lady Tigers reeled off 32 unanswered points to take command.
Jada Morant’s bucket gave Liberty its lead at 5-4 midway through the first quarter, before the Lady Tigers closed the period on a 13-0 run, with Mikayla Oliveira and Destini McLemore scoring on putbacks to finish the rally.
Ja’Nya Bush’s drive down the baseline pushed the lead to 25-13 before Malajah Roberts beat the halftime buzzer with a floater.
Morant’s bucket brought Liberty within 25-17 of the No. 7-ranked team in Class AAAAA before the Lady Tigers took over behind Bush, who was named the DeLisha Milton-Jones player of the game. Bush had six points in the third, and Jamia Ousley closed the quarter with a 3-pointer.
Janiyah Blevins, who had six points in the final quarter, and Bush led an opening flurry of the fourth quarter, and Kaydence Kern’s bucket stretched the lead to 57-17.
The Lady Tigers were a collective 6 of 30 from the free throw line for the game.
Bush finished with a game-high 20 points, 13 coming in the second half, while Oliveira and Blevins each added 11 points. McLemore chipped in nine points.
Blevins came up with seven steals, and Bush had six steals to go with four assists. McLemore registered five assists and McLemore and Oliveira cleaned up on the glass, with each pulling down a whopping 17 rebounds.
Morant and Roberts had six points each for the Lady Panthers.
