Tide baseball hold Blue vs. White game

LUDOWICI -- Long County Blue Tide baseball has officially gotten their season underway. The team hosted their annual Blue vs. White intersquad scrimmage game on Saturday, Feb. 5 with the Blue team coming out on top in an exciting 10-9 win.

The Blue team went right to work on senior pitcher Blake Holland. While Holland got an impressive looking strikeout, he walked four of the first five batters he faced and gave the Blue team an early run.

A hit did not happen until seven batters in as senior Cole Moss smacked a single into shallow right to score two runs. Sophomore Billy Bramwell followed him up with his own RBI single.

Two more runs were scored on passed balls as the Blue team were 6-0 going into the second.

It was more of the same the first three innings for the Blue team as they went up 10-0 going into the bottom of the third.

In the second, sophomore Shannon Filkins singled and senior Dwayne Rowe moved him to third on a double. Freshman Kenny Pickens walked to load the bases.

Senior Jacob Struble singled to score Filkins and sophomore Landon Runyon walked, scoring another run.

The Blue team added three more runs in the third after senior Brennan Lee scored two runs on a big double. Two more walks scored the Blue team’s tenth and final run of the game.

The first three innings belonged to the Blue team, but it was finally time for the White team to get in on the action. Freshman Anthony Bramwell was hit to a pitch and was scored by junior Gio Jackson’s RBI single.

Holland reached on a single and senior Seth Struble walked before senior Dan Edwards crushed his second double of the day, scoring two runs. The Blue team led 10-4 going into the fifth inning.

Holland opened the fifth inning with a single and Struble again walked. Edwards laid down a ground ball to the shortstop as his fellow senior scored the only run of the inning to make the score 10-5.

The score remained 10-5 until the bottom of the final inning as the White team kept their teammates off the board and allowed just two hits in the final four innings.

The younger Bramwell opened the bottom of the seventh with his first hit of the game and Jackson walked to put two runners on base.

Bramwell got to third on a stolen base and Jackson tried to steal second before Pickens made an incredible throw from behind the plate to get the first out.

Holland walked and stole second before Struble scored Bramwell on a single. Edwards walked as did senior Joseph Cammack before freshman Nick Sizemore hit a triple deep into left to score three runs and make the score 10-9 with two outs.

Senior Cole Moss was the savior for the Blue team as he recorded a looking strikeout, the team’s fifth K of the game, the preserve the win for his team.

The Blue Tide will host the Brunswick Pirates on Wednesday, Feb. 9 in a scrimmage.
