The Long County Blue Tide boys wrestling team hosted the Region 3-AAA championship tournament on Saturday and took home the trophy at the end of the day.
The Tide came into the tournament as the defending region champion and the third seed in the tournament.
They dominated all three of their opponents as they rolled to the region title. They hit the mat first against the six-seeded Calvary Day Cavaliers and jumped out to a 42-0 lead with three pinfall victories by Roman Stewart-Evans, Grant Dykes, and Casey Dean along with four forfeit victories.
Another forfeit victory gave them 48 points, putting the match out of reach for the Cavaliers. They finished off the Cavaliers with three more pinfall wins for Ethan Miller, Ethan Templeton, and Jermirus Leverette as they went on to a 72-12 win.
They jumped out to an even bigger lead against the Windsor Forest Knights in the second round as they led 54-0 after pinfall victories by Dykes, King Council, Kenton Douglas, Jason Kidwell, Tjayden Vaughn, Coleton Young and Elijah Williams.
They cruised to a 66-18 win after another forfeit win and a pin by Angel Wilson.
This set up the Tide with a championship match against the top-ranked Jenkins Warriors. The Tide got things started with pinfall wins by Council and Dean before a tech fall for the Warriors made it 12-5.
Kidwell and Vaughn got pins before the Warriors got their first pinfall of the match to make the score 24-11. The Tide took the next four rounds with pins from Sandejago Wilson, Williams, Miller and Tusiofo Tiapula.
Tiapula’s win gave the Tide a 48-11 lead, putting the region championship out of reach for Jenkins. They Tide won 54-28 after another pin for Stewart-Evans.
This is the second straight region title for the Tide and their third in just five years of existence. They will move on to the state duals tournament at Jefferson High School on Friday, January 16 and Saturday, January 17.
