LUDOWICI — It appears the Long County Blue Tide has a fear of stingers, losing to two different Yellow Jacket squads last Wednesday and Friday.
After dropping 3-15 against the Wayne County Yellow Jackets Wednesday, the Tide was back in the hive Friday as they traveled to Jeff Davis to play a region 2-AA game.
Ryan Simmons took the loss on the mound as the Tide ebbed 3-10 against a strong Jeff Davis Yellow Jacket team. The loss places Jeff Davis in fourth with the Tide just behind them in fifth in 2-AA. Paul Lewandowski was the lead hitter in the Tides’ loss. He went 2 for 4.
Placing the loss behind them, the Tide hit the road again Saturday for the Diamond Day Classic in Pembroke. Game one pitted the Tide against Bryan County. The Tide was like a tsunami over Bryan County in a 15-5 victory.
Lewandowski was the top Tide again as he went 6 for 6 with 2 home runs, 5 runs scored and 3 RBIs. He is also the winning pitcher.
“It was honestly one of the greatest performances that I’ve ever seen in high school baseball,” Tide coach Brian Thomas said of Lewandowski’s performance.
But game two pitted the Tide against the Tattnall County Warriors. The mighty Warriors had a lesson for the Tide and quickly shut them down 0-14.
David Shuman took the Tide loss on the mound and Chris Stock went 1 for 2 at bat.
“I am so proud of him and my whole team up to this point,” Thomas said. “I know that we are only 12-9 (overall) right now but this season has been a blessing with great senior leaders and hard-working under-classmen, I could not ask for more.”
The Tide is 5-6 in their region. They were scheduled to travel to Appling County last night to pit their skills against the third place team in the region. Results will be in Friday’s Coastal Courier.
