The Long County Blue Tide basketball teams closed out the regular season by celebrating 20 seniors when they hosted the Southeast Bulloch Yellow Jackets on Saturday, February 8. Both teams went on to dominant wins over their region foes, with the girls winning 5421 and the boys winning 73-44.
In the first game of the night, it was a low-scoring affair in the first quarter as the Lady Tide led 6-4 going into the second quarter. That is where the Lady Tide offense, led by senior Makinzie Moody, took over.
Moody scored 14 of the team’s 15 points in the quarter and hit a 3-pointer as the defense held strong to keep the Lady Jackets from scoring a basket. They hit one free throw in the quarter as the Lady Tide led 21-5 going into halftime.
That lead was all the Lady Tide needed to put the game into cruise control as they never looked back from the game. They led 37-11 at the end of the third.
Moody finished just one steal short of a double- double as she had 28 points and nine steals to lead the Lady Tide to a 6-13 overall record and 5-7 record in region play.
The boys were just as dominant in their matchup against the Yellow Jackets. They seemed to rely too much on the 3-point ball, which comes after they hit 12 3s against the Jackets in their first matchup of the year.
The Tide were down 8-4 early in the first quarter, but they went on a 7-2 run, capped off by Jy’son Mallard’s 3, to take an 1110 lead with 3:00 left.
They never looked back as they never trailed in the game again.
The Tide took a double- digit lead in the second quarter and never let the Jackets back within 11 points. They led 35-24 at the half and went on to win 73-44.
Junior Jonathan Talbert had a big game off the bench for the Tide as he scored 15 points while pulling down seven rebounds. Zyi Holt added 11 points in the win.
The Tide finished the regular season 11-13 and 7-6 in the region.
The boys fell 55-50 in overtime to Beach in the first round of the region tournament, and the girls lost 47-40 to Calvary Day.
