The Long County High School boys and girls basketball teams continued their uphill battles Tuesday, losing to Pierce County High School in Blackshear.
The Lady Bears managed a 46-36 victory over the Lady Tide, thanks, in part, to leading scorer Meghan Martin, a junior who put up 23 points for Pierce.
With the win, the Pierce County girls improved their record to 2-8 overall and 1-3 in Region 2-AA. The Lady Tide are winless for the season.
In the boys game, the offense for both teams worked hard to rack up points. However, the Bears squeaked by the Blue Tide, 72-71, in a barn-burner.
The win brought the Bears’ overall record to 5-5 and their region record to 2-2. The loss dropped the Tide’s overall record to 2-8 and their region mark to 1-2.
The Long County teams play region games at home tonight against Charlton County. The Long County boys team is averaging 64 points a game compared with the Indians’ 58. On defense, the Tide is allowing 69 points and Charlton has been giving up 56. The Blue Tide beat the Indians in the teams’ past five match-ups, including last year’s 94-72 victory.
The Tide girls likely are in for a competitive game. By comparison, the Lady Tide average 38 points a game and give up 68. The Lady Indians are scoring 37 points and allowing 62. The Lady Tide won their last four games against Charlton, including a tough 61-56 victory at their last meeting.
According to Georgia PrepCountry.com, three teams in Region 2-AA are undefeated. McIntosh County (6-5) is 4-0, and Appling County (8-2) and Benedictine (8-4) are one game back at 3-0.  Pierce County (5-5) and Charlton County (3-3) are 2-2. Long County (2-8) and Jeff Davis (4-6) are 1-3. Tattnall County (4-8) is at 1-4, and Brantley County (3-7) is 0-4.
On the ladies’ side, Appling County (5-3) and St. Vincent’s Academy (6-6) are still perfect in the region with 3-0 marks. Tattnall County (8-4) is at 4-1. Brantley County (9-2) sits at 3-1, and McIntosh County (5-7) is 2-2.  Rounding out the region is Jeff Davis (5-6) and Pierce County (2-8) at 1-3, and Long County (0-9) and Charlton County (1-5) still winless.
