Tide welcomes Cavs for showdown
Long County football file 1
Long County's offense gets a stern test against Calvary's stingy defense.

The Long County Blue Tide will put its perfect record on the line tonight against one of the state’s top Class AAA teams.

The Tide will play host to the Calvary Day Cavaliers, ranked in the top 10 among Class AAA-A private schools, with first place in Region 3-AAA on the line.

The Tide, 5-0 overall and 4-0 in the region, is coming off a 30-17 win over Beach.

The Tide has relied heavily on its rushing attack, with Jason Familia’s 500-plus yards leading the way. Cortney Charles is second on the team in rushing.

But the Cavs, 4-1 on the season and 4-0 in the region, have given up just 61 points on the season, and 31 of those came in their last outing, a three-point win over Jenkins on September 20.

Defensive tackle Walter Mathis, one of the top prospects in the state and a LSU commit, leads the Cavs defense. The 6-foot-3, 285-pound Mathis has four tackles for loss in five games, and the Cavs as a team have 25 stops behind the line of scrimmage.

Sophomore quarterback James Mobley has completed 75% of his passes, throwing for 1,160 yards and 12 touchdowns in just five games.

Senior Thomas Blackshear has 475 yards and six TDs on 19 catches, and Edward Coleman has 311 yards and four scores on 17 catches.

Sophomore Brexton Bell has 223 yards and two touchdowns on just 23 carries for the Cavs.
