Bradwell Institute’s track and field teams kicked off the 2018 season at home against Savannah Country Day and McIntosh County Academy Thursday at Bradwell Institute.

After losing 90 percent of the team to graduation, coach DeAndre Davis, region coach of the year four out of the last seven years, was impressed with his young team’s performance.

Athletes on this year’s team expected to excel are Keith Milner, third in the state last year in shot put; DaShaun Coleman in the high jump, 200 and 400 meters; and Anthony McClinton in the pole vault, 200x and 400x relays.

Kasim Upchurch, a 10th grader, is among the top five distance runners in the state. Shamar Rose, another 10th grader, runs the 100, 200 and both relays.

This year, there are five first time track and field athletes from the boys basketball team competing in jumps, hurdles and sprints.

Bradwell’s boys track team participated in 12 events and won 10.

"These kids practice every day and hold each other accountable. For a young team they did really good today." Davis said after the meet.

The next meet for Bradwell is today starting 9 a.m. at Bradwell.
