The Bradwell Tigers cross country team has competed in two meets and head coach Ken Griffin said his young runners are developing.

Griffin and assistant coach Brian Williams have 20 boys and 10 girls on their team and Griffin said the future of the varsity team will stem from developing the 19 9th- and 10th-graders they have.

Varsity seniors Anthony Motley, Cody Graham, Camille Jackson, Danielle Jacobs and Natalie Sharp lead the squad.

Their first meet was in Wayne County on Aug. 20.

"Due to not having eligibility returned by the GHSA, we carried only five runners to the meet," Griffin said. "Except for Jeremy Motley, this was the first time any of the runners had participated in a cross country meet. We placed 6th of seven teams entering the tournament."

Camden County was the overall winner with a time of 1:39:37. The Tigers came in at 2:09:6. The lead runner for Bradwell was Chris Payne.

On Aug. 29, the whole team raced in the PUMA XC Kickoff Classic in Savannah’s Daffin Park. In the boys varsity heat, 22 schools were represented and Bradwell placed 20th. Kell High School of Marietta took first with a time of 1:28:41.

"A complete Bradwell team entered the meet, which gave us a better perspective of how our team will look," Griffin said. "The team was led by Anthony Motley."

Griffin said new transfer student Zach Motes added strength to the team.

"In comparing the cumulative time frames between the Wayne meet and the PUMA meet, we reduced our time by 19 minutes," Griffin said. "In addition, we closed the gap between our previous meet with same competitors from cumulative 30 minutes to 10 minutes."

The girls’ varsity placed 13th of 17 schools. Lady Tiger Camille Jackson led the squad, finishing in 23:09.

"Of the 132 girls running, Camille was the 13th person to cross the finish line," Griffin said. "Of the Region 3AAAAA schools participating, we placed second to Savannah Arts Academy (2nd in meet) and ahead of Camden (14th in the meet)."

The JV tigers were led by Jeremy Motley. They placed 7th in the two-mile run.

Next up for the runners is the Jekyll Island Georgia/Florida Invitational on Sept. 12.
