Most area schools have been eliminated from the baseball playoffs and are winding down their school year, but the players on Wayne County’s baseball team have traded in their caps and gowns for jerseys and cleats as they host Lakeside, Evans in the final four on Monday.
The road to the final four started as the Yellow Jackets buzzed away Westside, 9-4 and 22-4.
The victory allowed the Yellow Jackets to advance to round two where they faced Ola High School of McDonough.
The Yellow Jackets took a quick 11-5 win in game one and swept the series with a 7-4 win in 10 innings in game two.
Yellow Jackets pitcher Tyler Palmer, Region 2-AAAA’s player of the year, threw more than 180 pitches in the 10 innings and smacked a two-run homer, according to a news report of the Press Sentinel.
The boys hosted Sprayberry for round three and earned a quick 11-1 victory in four innings of game one. Game two went six innings with the Yellow Jackets winning 7-2.
Currently, the Jesup team is 29-3 overall as they prepare to take on the Panthers who come in with a 27-6 overall record.
Lakeside, Evans is 3-1 against the Yellow Jackets in regular season play.
Monday’s fourth round double-header starts at 4 p.m. in Jesup. Game two is scheduled for 7 p.m.
