Valdosta State honors Liberty native

Kenneth Eli Grant of Atlanta is one of three recent recipients of the Graduate of the Last Decade Award at Valdosta State University. GOLD Award recipients are chosen by the Valdosta State University Alumni Association Board. To be eligible, potential recipients must exhibit high character in their professions and communities within 10 years of graduation. Honorees received plaques, which were presented during halftime at a VSU men’s basketball game. Recipients also took a campus tour and attended a reception Feb. 27.  Their biographies will be featured in the college’s Alumni Magazine.
Grant was one of 43 fellows selected nationwide for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Emerging Leaders Program from 2007-09. He also was a deacon with the New Testament House of Prayer. Grant completed a hospitality management/guest services internship in 2005 at the Walt Disney World Company and a graduate assistantship with the dean of education at Armstrong Atlantic State University. He has held memberships in several national and international honor societies, was named to the National Dean’s List, received numerous undergraduate and graduate scholarships, and served as president of Psi Chi-National Honor Society in Psychology.
Grant is currently a public health analyst with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. He graduated cum laude in 2004 with a bachelor’s of science in psychology from Valdosta, Phi Kappa Phi and summa cum laude with a master’s of public health in community health education from Armstrong Atlantic State University in 2006. Grant was admitted into the doctor of public health in health behavior and education at Georgia Southern University in 2007.  He is a 2000 graduate of Liberty County High School.
Grant is the triplet son of David Grant Jr. of Riceboro and the late Carolyn Elaine Darby Grant. He also was raised by his paternal aunt and uncle, Mamie Lee Grant Halsell of Midway and the late Willie Lee Halsell Sr. His maternal grandparents are the late Arthur Wastine Darby Sr. and Bertha Pearline Nelson Darby of Orangeburg, S.C. His paternal grandparents are the late David Grant Sr. and Louisiana Fagan Grant-Askew of Riceboro.
