During the late 17th century, a new group of settlers called Puritans decided to escape persecution from church leadership and the King, and begin a journey to America where they established themselves in Massachusetts in 1685.
They were group of people who were dissatisfied and unhappy with the Church of England and worked towards religious, ethical and communal transformation)
Later, they migrated south and became established in coastal Georgia. The people of the Puritan community built the Midway Church in 1754 thatlater was burned by the English in 1777 and rebuilt in 1792.
About 1,200 of these Puritans were buried in the Midway Cemetery. When it was founded, the area was merely called the Midway District.
