Area residents are invited to Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield’s Independence Day free celebrations.

At Hunter, the celebration will be Thursday at Family Day Field, starting at 8:30 p.m. Patriotic music by the 3rdID Band will fill the air, setting the stage for fireworks beginning about 9:30.

On July 4, at Cottrell Field, a Salute to the Nation will include the 3rd ID Band. The ceremony will begin at 8:30 p.m., followed by fireworks

The colorful ceremony will include the firing of one artillery round for each of America's 50 states. Old Glory and the flags of each state and the nation's eight territories will be presented.

Pets and coolers are welcome at both celebrations. You can also bring seating and blankets, although bleachers are on Stewart.

 

GC’s golf scramble  

Bring a four-person team or join a team for the Hunter Garrison Commander’s Golf Scramble July 11 at Hunter Golf Course. Play begins at 9 a.m. Players are asked to register by July 9.

The $35 per person entry fee includes the golf cart, range balls and prizes. For more information, call 315-9115.

 

Movies in the Park

The sing-along version of “Frozen” (PG) is the next summer outdoor movie at Holbrook Pond Recreation Area. The free show starts at 8:30 p.m. July 12 and is shown on a 9x16 foot outdoor screen. Snacks and drinks are available for purchase. Bring lawn chairs and blankets. For more information, call 767-4316.

 

Aeration of greens

Play will be limited to the front or back nine holes during aeration of the greens at Hunter Golf Course July 14 and 15, weather permitting. For more information, call 315-9115.

 

Deep sea fishing

Join Leisure Travel on an up to 10-hour offshore fishing excursion from Jekyll Island Marina July 26 at 5 a.m. The cost is $125 per person. Register by July 15.

Coolers (48-quart maximum) for drinks and lunch welcome, but no glass. Gear and bait will be furnished. A license is not required to fish.

Caribbean cruise

Plan now to set sail on an 8-day eastern Caribbean cruise Oct. 10-18, 2015. Stops are planned for St. Maarten, St. Kitts, Puerto Rico, and Grand Turk. Register by July 18.

Inside cabins are $702.55 per person, ocean view cabins are $852.55 and balconies are $1,032.55.

Under a payment plan, $25 is due by July 18, $300 by next May 18 and the balance by July 27. 2015. Prices are based on double occupancy.

Kayak/canoe trips

Join Outdoor Recreation on a leisurely canoe/kayak river float on July 19 or Aug. 16.

All equipment is provided and lifeguards will be on the trips. Bring your own lunch for a picnic on a sandbar or shaded area. The $20 per person cost includes canoe or kayak.

Mini triathlon

Men and women are invited to compete in a Mini Indoor Triathlon July 21-25 at Newman Fitness Center on Stewart or Tominac Fitness Center on Hunter. There’s no charge.

Participants are asked to register by July 18. Open to all military ID cardholders 17 and older.

Top contestants will win prizes, based on a 10-minute timed swim in a lap pool and run on treadmill, plus 20 minutes on a stationary bike.

Company golf tourney

Join a four-man team in the Company-Level Golf Scramble July 22. Interested companies need to submit a letter of intent to play to Stewart (Bennett) or Hunter (Squires) Sports Offices, no later than July 17. Play will begin at 9 a.m. at Taylors Creek and Hunter golf courses. The $20 per person cost covers greens fees, cart and lunch.

Youth soccer

Register by July 18 for Youth Fall Soccer Leagues on Hunter. Play is open to boys and girls, 4-11. Teams are coed.

School registration

Military children can register for the 2014-5 Liberty County school year from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on July 23 at your specific school.

All schools register students, provide assignments, create schedules and answer questions.

Documentation needed: birth certificate, Social Security card, immunization records, medical screening, two proofs of residence, and previous report card/school transcripts.

Skeet and trap

Hunter Army Airfield’s Skeet and Trap Range will have a 50-bird skeet/trap shoot from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. July 26. The range is off South Perimeter Road. Register by July 24.

The first 10 soldiers to register get free enrollment courtesy of Mossy Oak Gun Club. Cost is $25 for one event or $40 for both and includes lunch and door prizes.

First place guaranteed for expert, intermediate, novice, and trap (all levels combined).  For more information, call 315-9554.

 

Free Jaguars tickets

Until all are sold, buy two tickets for Jaguars-Falcons or Jaguars-Buccaneers pre-season games at EverBank Field in Jacksonville and you'll get two tickets. The tickets are in the 200 section.

Tickets are sold at Stewart/Hunter Leisure Travel offices. The Stewart office (767-2841) is in the PX Furniture Mall Complex and is open 9:30 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Friday. The Hunter office (315-3674), is in Hunter PX Exchange and is open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday.

Kickoff for the Buccaneers game Aug. 8 is 7:30 p.m. Kickoff for the Falcons is 6 p.m. Aug. 28.
