Weekly FMWR briefing for Sept. 2-8

The U.S. Army Soldier Show, a 75-minute song-and-dance production by active duty, Army Reserve and Army National Guard soldiers, will be presented at 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Newman Fitness Center.

Stewart's own SPC Millie Sneed is a featured vocalist.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. There is no admission charge, and the public is welcome.

 

Operation Rising Star

Singers from Stewart and Hunter are invited to compete in Operation Rising Star, the Army’s version of “American Idol.”

Register at Stewart Recreation office, suite 125, or at the Hunter Leisure Travel Office. There is no charge. Competition is open to active duty, National Guard or Reserve from any branch of service, and family members who are at least 18.

Vineyard trip

Leisure Travel is planning a trip to the Meinhardt Vineyards and Winery near Statesboro on Sept. 14. The trip begins at 11 a.m.

Registration continue until Saturday. The cost is $25. Dinner, at a local restaurant, will be at participants’ expense.

Bridal Showcase

A Bridal Showcase, from 1:30-4:30 p.m. Saturday in the Club Stewart Ballroom, will feature a variety of businesses and wedding experts. Attendees will receive gift bags and "passport" that could win one of two $500 wedding reception certificates. Admission is $10 per person for active duty and $13 for others. The showcase is open to the public.

BOSS car wash

Myrtle Beach

Register by Sept. 9 for a Leisure Travel trip to Myrtle Beach, S.C., on Sept. 20-22.

Golf scramble

Play in the Hunter Garrison Commander’s Golf Scramble at 1 p.m. Sept. 13. Participants are asked to register by Sept. 11.

The $40 per person entry fee includes greens and cart fees, range balls and light lunch. Mulligans cost $5 for one and $10 for two.

Family Quest

Families are invited to a weekend of fun, including geocaching, archery, canoe/kayaking, camping, water gun competition, cooking and more at Holbrook Pond Recreation Area.

It will be Sept. 13-14 and registration costs $50 per family and $25 for individuals. Prizes awarded.

Weightlifting competition

‘The Rock’ powerlifting and bench press competition will be Sept. 14 at 4th IBCT Fitness Center, with weigh-in at 8:30 a.m., briefing at 9:30and competition at 10:15.

Awards will be presented in various weight classes, using the Schwartz-Malone Power Lifting formula.

Blues & BBQ

The 10thannual Blues & BBQ Festival, featuring music, food, fun and free kids activities, will be staged in downtown Hinesville from 2-11:30 p.m. on Sept. 21.

The event is hosted by the Hinesville Area Arts Council and supported by Fort Stewart Family and MWR.

Musical entertainment starts at 4:30 p.m. featuring “Soul Gravy,” followed by headliner “Swamp Cabbage” and the closing act “3rd Class Citizens.”

Judges pick the best barbecued pork, chicken and ribs. Plus, there’s a people’s choice best barbecue category.

Rock Strongman, Strongwoman

Test yourself. Find out if you are the strongest man or woman at Fort Stewart/Hunter during The Rock Strongman & Strongwoman Competition.

The competition will be at 4 p.m. Sept. 26 at 4th IBCT Fitness Center. Register by Sept. 20.

Events include deadlifts, one-arm dumbbell press, tire flip, sled pull and keg toss/carry. Transportation to and from Hunter provided.

Kids fishing

Children, 15 and youngerm can each catch up to five catfish at the Kids Fishing Event from 7-10 a.m. Sept. 28 at the Hallstrom Lake Recreation Area on Hunter.

There’s no charge and no fishing license is required. Bring your fishing pole, limited bait will be available.

Bass Tournament

Compete for prizes in a Catch-and-Release Bass Tournament at 6:30 a.m. Sept. 28 at Metz Pond on Fort Stewart.

Prizes will be awarded in adult and youth categories.

Participants can fish from the bank or bass boat (trolling motors only). Live bait prohibited. Boat rentals available at Holbrook Equipment Center to military ID cardholders with a boat safety card.

Participants must have Georgia and Stewart/Hunter fishing permit (unless age 15 and under). Fees based on registration.
