The 2014 Army Soldier Show, a live Broadway-style revue, is coming to Newman Fitness Center at Stewart on Saturday and to Tominac Fitness Center at Hunter next Monday. Both performances begin at 7 p.m. They are free and open to the public.

The show’s cast includes two soldiers from the Coastal Empire: Staff Sgt. Tyrell L. Mays, a Swainsboro native who graduated from Swainsboro High School in 2000, and SPC Copey M. Rice, a native of Valdosta who graduated from Lowndes County High School in 2008.

This year's theme is "Stand Strong.”

 

Dinner and bowling

Families can get a discount on dinner and bowling from noon-7 p.m. Sunday at Stewart Bowling Center. For $30, your family of five gets two games per person, shoe rental, and dinner.

Independence Day

Everyone is the area is invited to Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield's Fourth of July free celebrations.

At Hunter, the celebration will be July 3 at Family Day Field, starting at 8:30 p.m. The sound of patriotic, ceremonial music by the 3rdID Band will fill the air, setting the stage for fireworks beginning about 9:30.

On July 4 on Fort Stewart's Cottrell Field, a Salute to the Nation will include music by the 3rd ID Band. The ceremony will begin at 8:30 p.m. and will be followed by fireworks.

The colorful ceremony will include the firing of one artillery round for each of America's 50 states. Old Glory and the flags of each state and the nation's eight territories will be presented.

Pets and coolers are welcome. Guests also are welcome to bring seating and blankets to either event, although bleachers are available at Cottrell.

 

GC’s scramble  

Bring a 4-person team or join one in the Hunter Garrison Commander’s Golf Scramble July 11 at Hunter Golf Course. Play begins at 9 a.m. Players are asked to register by July 9.

The $35 per person fee includes golf cart, range balls and prizes. For more information, call 315-9115.

 

Deep-sea fishing

Join Leisure Travel on an 8- to 10-hour offshore fishing excursion departing Jekyll Island Marina July 26 at 5 a.m. You could catch sea bass, red snapper, grouper and angel fish.

The cost is $125 per person. Registration closes July 15.

Coolers (48-quart maximum) for drinks and lunch welcome, but no glass. All gear and bait will be furnished. A license is not required.

Participants must be 13 or older

Caribbean cruise

Plans now for an eight-day eastern Caribbean cruise aboard Carnival's Sunshine. Sail dates are Oct. 10-18, 2015, with stops at St. Maarten, St. Kitts, Puerto Rico and Grand Turk.

Register by July 18. Inside cabins are $702.55 per person, ocean view cabins are $852.55 per person and balconies are $1,032.55.

Under a payment plan, $25 is due by July 18, $300 by May 18, 2015, and the balance by July 27. 2015. Prices are based on double occupancy, but do not include gratuities.

Youth soccer

Registration continues through July 18 for Youth Fall Soccer Leagues at Hunter.

Play is open to boys and girls, ages 4-11. Practice begins in August and the season starts in September. Teams are coed.

School registration

Bring your military school age family member to register for the 2014-15 Liberty County school year July 23 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Registration will take place at your specific school.

All schools register students, give information, create schedules, and answer school-related questions.

Documentation needed: birth certificate, Social Security card, immunization records, medical screening, two proofs of residence, and previous report card/school transcripts.
