Lady 76ers
to hold tryouts

 

The South Georgia Lady 76ers girls basketball team will have tryouts from 9 a.m.- 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20. Tryouts are open to girls ages 10-16. Registration begins at 9 a.m. and the fee is $100. LCRD volleyball starting

 

Registration will be accepted through Feb. 19 at the Liberty County Recreation Department for youth and adult volleyball. The youth program is for ages 10-15 and the fee is $15 per child. Ages 16 and older may participate in the adult program. The cost for adult team entries is $150 per team. Practices start in early March and matches begin in late March. All participants must have a birth certificate or other age verification document on file at the LCRD. Volunteer coaches are needed. Register online at www.lcrd.net. For information, call 448-5273.

Georgia Fury needs players

The South Georgia Fury girls fast pitch travel softball team is looking for players for their 14 and under and 12 and under teams.

Post bowling tournament set

Fort Stewart will have an open championship bowling tournament April 17-18 and 24-25, at Marne Lanes. Registration closes April 3. Call 767-4866.

Bike Ride Dice Run to benefit Taylor McCartney

Long County resident Taylor McCartney, 12, was born with a rare disease called Gorhams, also known as "vanishing bone disease." Long County residents are helping the girl and her family raise money to cover Taylor’s travel and medical expenses.

A motorcycle dice run is planned for Feb. 6 from the Long County High School parking lot, 550 S. McDonald St. Registration runs from 10-11:30 a.m. and the first bikes roll out at 11:45 a.m.

LCRD track and field starting

Registration will be accepted through Feb. 19 at the Liberty County Recreation Department for the 2010 track and field program. The program is open to Liberty County residents who turn 7 and do not turn 15 before Jan. 1. Age divisions are 7-8, 9-10, 11-12 and 13-14 for boys and girls. Practices will start in early March with meets beginning in late March. The cost is $15 per participant. All participants must have a birth certificate or other age verification document on file at the LCRD. Volunteers are needed to coach and help with timing and scoring. 15U Rebels: 11 a.m.-2 p.m. March 6, coached by Reginalde Castille and assisted by Christopher Wright

16U Rebels: 2-5 p.m. March 6, coached by Daryl McCrae

17U Rebels: 1-4 p.m. March 13, coached by Ernie Walthour and assisted by David Linderman and Ben Scott

Lady Rebels’ teams forming

The St. James Coastal Crew Rebels are holding tryouts for their new Lady Rebels teams. The 17U girls will be coached by Mike Brown and the 15U will be coached by Rosby Frasier. YMCA soccer starting

Liberty County YMCA spring soccer registration began Feb. 3, and the season begins March 23. It is open to ages 3-14. Volunteer coaches are needed, too. For more information, call Richard Somerville at 368-9622.

Hinesville Katz needs players

Pitching and softball coach Misty Eastlake is looking for players for the 16U year-round traveling softball team, the Hinesville Katz. The team needs infielders and pitchers. Interested athletes should come to practice from 2-4 p.m. every Sunday at Bradwel’s softball field. For information on playing or sponsoring a team, call Eastlake at 977-2017.

Soccer coaching classes

Hinesville Soccer will host representatives from Georgia Soccer for coaching classes at First Presbyterian Christian Academy in Hinesville.

The course is $75 for members and $200 for non-members. Georgia Soccer members include registered players, registered team coaches, parents of players and league officials. The course is intermediate level geared toward providing a foundation for coaching players in select programs or the older recreational teams. The course consists of 16 hours of instruction in the theory and practice. The course is Jan. 29-31.

A different level course is free for members and $90
for non-members. It is tailored for coaches working with U-10 and U-12 recreational players. The emphasis is on teaching young players and having fun. The course consists of seven hours of instruction and practice and is set for Feb. 6.

Another course is free for members and $50 for non-members. It is four hours long and provides fun activities that enhance skill development.

BI wall of fame submissions

Bradwell Institute is building a wall of fame featuring former BI Tiger athletes who played sports on the college level. Tiger coach Jeff Miller and his assistants have a partial list of athletes, but they’d like even more. Names and photos are being gathered. To submit a name or photo the following criteria must be met:

The former athlete must have graduated from Bradwell Institute. The student athlete must have gone on to play sports at the college level and must have graduate from college.

Try out for new AAU team

A new 10U AAU basketball team, Scott’s All-Stars, will have their final at 4:30 p.m. Feb. 20, at the Liberty County YMCA. The team is seeking community support and sponsors. YMCA after-school program

The Liberty County YMCA has an after-school program for middle school children. The program offers a safe place for teenagers and includes daily devotions, snacks and homework help. Participants take field trips, explore career opportunities, do arts and crafts and play in sports tournaments.
